Auser:The message in the lower left corner has " Applying Filtering Rules....", and there may not have been any new messages.
What about turning off filtering for a try? Does your AV scanner scan the new mail directory (every new mail is stored in a single file as opposed to other folders where all messges are stored in a single file only)? If so try without it.
